Narrative:
We were cleared to hold at neuto intersection on the rmg STAR into atl. After 1 turn in the holding, both captain and first officer noticed an aircraft on TCASII at our altitude on the STAR approaching neuto, approximately 15 mi from our position. As the traffic approached, we established visual contact with the aircraft, an MD88. Subsequently, we received a TCASII TA when we were approximately 3 mi from the conflicting aircraft. ZTL immediately instructed us to make a hard right turn while telling the MD88 to make a hard left turn. Once clear of traffic, we resumed holding at neuto and the MD88 was descended to FL280 and given holding instructions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 CREW IN HOLDING PATTERN TAKES EVASIVE ACTION WHEN AN MD88 APPROACHES THE HOLDING PATTERN AT THE SAME ALT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO HOLD AT NEUTO INTXN ON THE RMG STAR INTO ATL. AFTER 1 TURN IN THE HOLDING, BOTH CAPT AND FO NOTICED AN ACFT ON TCASII AT OUR ALT ON THE STAR APCHING NEUTO, APPROX 15 MI FROM OUR POS. AS THE TFC APCHED, WE ESTABLISHED VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE ACFT, AN MD88. SUBSEQUENTLY, WE RECEIVED A TCASII TA WHEN WE WERE APPROX 3 MI FROM THE CONFLICTING ACFT. ZTL IMMEDIATELY INSTRUCTED US TO MAKE A HARD R TURN WHILE TELLING THE MD88 TO MAKE A HARD L TURN. ONCE CLR OF TFC, WE RESUMED HOLDING AT NEUTO AND THE MD88 WAS DSNDED TO FL280 AND GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS.
