Narrative:
I was the captain on flight from smf to las. Approximately 50-60 mi east of smf, climbing through FL210, we asked for and received permission from ATC to deviate right off course to avoid some clouds. While still in clear VMC conditions, we encountered moderate turbulence that lasted 3-5 seconds. Right after the encounter I called the flight attendants to check on their condition and that of the passenger. The lead flight attendant said that all 3 flight attendants had been thrown to the floor and that a beverage cart had been knocked over. She said that she thought that everyone was all right. About 10 mins later, the lead flight attendant came onto the flight deck and asked that all 3 flight attendants be replaced for the remainder of their trip when we got to las. About 15 mins later, she again called the flight deck and asked that the paramedics meet the flight in las to check the condition of the flight attendants and a couple of the passenger. The 3 flight attendants were met by and examined by the paramedics and taken to a hospital in las vegas for further observation. At the time of the turbulence encounter, the WX radar was in use and the seat belt sign was on.
