Narrative:
On climb out from clt sbound, we were given a vector to turn right to 220 degrees. We replied that we were unable 220 degrees and that we required at least 250 degrees to avoid a building cell. ATC replied with a clearance to fly no further right than 230 degrees. While established on 230 degrees, it became apparent that a turn to 260 degrees would be necessary to avoid the cell. We tried to call ATC to advise them but radio traffic was heavy. I made a turn to 260 degrees and avoided the cell and was back on course in less than 60 seconds. ATC commented on our heading but it appeared from the controller's tone that there never was a conflict. Supplemental information from acn 589983: clt calls and tells us to expedite to the south. I see traffic on the TCASII (but no TA).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW DEVIATED FURTHER R THAN CLRED BY DEP CTL DUE TO WX AVOIDANCE AND A CONGESTED RADIO FREQ.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM CLT SBOUND, WE WERE GIVEN A VECTOR TO TURN R TO 220 DEGS. WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE UNABLE 220 DEGS AND THAT WE REQUIRED AT LEAST 250 DEGS TO AVOID A BUILDING CELL. ATC REPLIED WITH A CLRNC TO FLY NO FURTHER R THAN 230 DEGS. WHILE ESTABLISHED ON 230 DEGS, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT A TURN TO 260 DEGS WOULD BE NECESSARY TO AVOID THE CELL. WE TRIED TO CALL ATC TO ADVISE THEM BUT RADIO TFC WAS HVY. I MADE A TURN TO 260 DEGS AND AVOIDED THE CELL AND WAS BACK ON COURSE IN LESS THAN 60 SECONDS. ATC COMMENTED ON OUR HDG BUT IT APPEARED FROM THE CTLR'S TONE THAT THERE NEVER WAS A CONFLICT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 589983: CLT CALLS AND TELLS US TO EXPEDITE TO THE S. I SEE TFC ON THE TCASII (BUT NO TA).
