Narrative:
I was cleared for the NDB runway 15 into ism and told to maintain 2000 ft until established. I had the approach loaded into my GPS to monitor the approach. The GPS was showing me 1 mi from vinel, so I began a descent. Upon reaching 1200 ft, I realized that instead of 'distance,' the GPS was showing ete, so I was not actually 1 mi outside of vinel as I had thought. I changed the GPS to show distance and continued and made a normal landing. I was within 10 mi of ism, so no minimums were broken. I was also in VMC and could see the ground. During my en route phase of flight, I had set the flight plan in the GPS to show ete and forgot to change it back to 'distance' before starting the approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE NDB RWY 15 APCH TO ISM IS FLOWN USING AN INCORRECTLY PROGRAMMED GPS AS A REF RESULTING IN DSCNT FROM ASSIGNED ALT WITHOUT AWARENESS OF EXACT LOCATION.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR THE NDB RWY 15 INTO ISM AND TOLD TO MAINTAIN 2000 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED. I HAD THE APCH LOADED INTO MY GPS TO MONITOR THE APCH. THE GPS WAS SHOWING ME 1 MI FROM VINEL, SO I BEGAN A DSCNT. UPON REACHING 1200 FT, I REALIZED THAT INSTEAD OF 'DISTANCE,' THE GPS WAS SHOWING ETE, SO I WAS NOT ACTUALLY 1 MI OUTSIDE OF VINEL AS I HAD THOUGHT. I CHANGED THE GPS TO SHOW DISTANCE AND CONTINUED AND MADE A NORMAL LNDG. I WAS WITHIN 10 MI OF ISM, SO NO MINIMUMS WERE BROKEN. I WAS ALSO IN VMC AND COULD SEE THE GND. DURING MY ENRTE PHASE OF FLT, I HAD SET THE FLT PLAN IN THE GPS TO SHOW ETE AND FORGOT TO CHANGE IT BACK TO 'DISTANCE' BEFORE STARTING THE APCH.
