Narrative:

Mechanic signed off maintenance item 55 as ready for return to service. The discrepancy was not accomplished. Had the technician actually been in the aircraft and looked at the discrepancy, he would not have signed it off. Please ensure that technicians signing off work as complete actually do the work prior to recording such in the maintenance log.

Title: A B737-800 CAPT RPTS TECHNICIAN SIGNING MAINT RELEASE WITH OBVIOUS OPEN LOGBOOK ITEM NOT CORRECTED OR ANSWERED.

Narrative: MECH SIGNED OFF MAINT ITEM 55 AS READY FOR RETURN TO SVC. THE DISCREPANCY WAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED. HAD THE TECHNICIAN ACTUALLY BEEN IN THE ACFT AND LOOKED AT THE DISCREPANCY, HE WOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED IT OFF. PLEASE ENSURE THAT TECHNICIANS SIGNING OFF WORK AS COMPLETE ACTUALLY DO THE WORK PRIOR TO RECORDING SUCH IN THE MAINT LOG.
