Narrative:
We departed ZZZ around XA45. We were departing IFR in VMC conditions. Immediately on lifting off on the takeoff roll a loud rumbling noise was heard. We asked to come around for landing. In the short time we were on downwind, I tried to isolate the noise. I could not do this, so I landed the aircraft. On the landing roll I saw the right nose cowling door. We notified the tower that something was on the runway. After departing the runway, I confirmed that the cowling was missing. We told the tower and taxied back to parking. Callback: the reporter stated the cowling was visually checked by the first officer, and myself, the captain. The reporter said the latches appeared latched and faired. The reporter stated examination of the recovered cowling indicated the front 2 latches were not latched or were false latched with no visible indication of being unlocked. The reporter said it is not uncommon on the lear to land and find 1 or 2 latches unlocked and sticking out.

CALLBACK: THE RPTR STATED THE COWLING WAS VISUALLY CHKED BY THE FO, AND MYSELF, THE CAPT. THE RPTR SAID THE LATCHES APPEARED LATCHED AND FAIRED. THE RPTR STATED EXAMINATION OF THE RECOVERED COWLING INDICATED THE FRONT 2 LATCHES WERE NOT LATCHED OR WERE FALSE LATCHED WITH NO VISIBLE INDICATION OF BEING UNLOCKED. THE RPTR SAID IT IS NOT UNCOMMON ON THE LEAR TO LAND AND FIND 1 OR 2 LATCHES UNLOCKED AND STICKING OUT.
