Narrative:
While landing at cnw, I was cleared to land on runway 35L and I landed on runway 35R. This was caused by several factors. The most substantial being that from the air it looked as if there was only one runway. The markings for runway 35L/17R are not very plain and need to be re-painted. At pattern altitude runway 35L/17R is indistinguishable from the ramp. The other factor was that I had not flown into cnw in for many yrs. According to the tower a beech twin was cleared to land on runway 35R and had to go around, but that separation was maintained. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter advised that his previous experience at cnw was as a flight engineer on a navy P3. This was his first time at cnw as a pilot. His primary issue continues to be the poor marking of the runway. He noted that the parallel runway 35R/17L had just been resurfaced and the markings were fresh. By comparison runway 35L was not readily discernible.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF PA28 LANDED ON 35R VICE 35L AT CNW. FEELS 35L INADEQUATELY IDENTIFIED DUE TO ITS SHARED SURFACE WITH THE ARPT RAMP AREA.
Narrative: WHILE LNDG AT CNW, I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 35L AND I LANDED ON RWY 35R. THIS WAS CAUSED BY SEVERAL FACTORS. THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL BEING THAT FROM THE AIR IT LOOKED AS IF THERE WAS ONLY ONE RWY. THE MARKINGS FOR RWY 35L/17R ARE NOT VERY PLAIN AND NEED TO BE RE-PAINTED. AT PATTERN ALT RWY 35L/17R IS INDISTINGUISHABLE FROM THE RAMP. THE OTHER FACTOR WAS THAT I HAD NOT FLOWN INTO CNW IN FOR MANY YRS. ACCORDING TO THE TWR A BEECH TWIN WAS CLEARED TO LAND ON RWY 35R AND HAD TO GO AROUND, BUT THAT SEPARATION WAS MAINTAINED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THAT HIS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AT CNW WAS AS A FLT ENGINEER ON A NAVY P3. THIS WAS HIS FIRST TIME AT CNW AS A PLT. HIS PRIMARY ISSUE CONTINUES TO BE THE POOR MARKING OF THE RWY. HE NOTED THAT THE PARALLEL RWY 35R/17L HAD JUST BEEN RESURFACED AND THE MARKINGS WERE FRESH. BY COMPARISON RWY 35L WAS NOT READILY DISCERNIBLE.
