Narrative:
Departing lax VFR, called clearance and asked for VFR clearance to psp with flight following. Clearance given was '(runway heading) to shoreline, turn left at shoreline, do not climb above 1500 ft, squawk 1200.' I thought to myself at the time that this was an unusual clearance for flight following but followed clearance after takeoff. Tower handoff was 'frequency change approved.' I asked tower for frequency for flight following and he gave me socal approach frequency. Attempting to call socal approach was told to standby. Waited several mins while flying southerly heading offshore and attempted to contact socal again. This time I was told very sternly to standby, they would call me. I consulted my los angeles VFR terminal area chart and determined that I could start a climb and remain clear of class B airspace. VFR climb was made to 9500 ft and turn on heading for psp was made after consulting chart to stay clear of class B. Waited for several more mins while listening on socal frequency and not hearing any more xmissions, again attempted to check in with socal. This time socal tells me that they forgot about me (lots of laughter in background). 'What can we do for you?' I told them that I no longer needed their service and that I was changing frequency. Arriving at psp, ground control gives me number to call. I'm thinking that socal is calling to apologize. Instead, I was told that I entered class B without clearance. I believe that I didn't enter the class B. Socal can be difficult to deal with at times.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A TWIN TURBO ATP PLT IS ALLEGED TO HAVE PENETRATED THE CLASS B OF LAX DURING HIS VFR DEP FROM LAX, CA.
Narrative: DEPARTING LAX VFR, CALLED CLRNC AND ASKED FOR VFR CLRNC TO PSP WITH FLT FOLLOWING. CLRNC GIVEN WAS '(RWY HEADING) TO SHORELINE, TURN L AT SHORELINE, DO NOT CLB ABOVE 1500 FT, SQUAWK 1200.' I THOUGHT TO MYSELF AT THE TIME THAT THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL CLRNC FOR FLT FOLLOWING BUT FOLLOWED CLRNC AFTER TKOF. TWR HDOF WAS 'FREQ CHANGE APPROVED.' I ASKED TWR FOR FREQ FOR FLT FOLLOWING AND HE GAVE ME SOCAL APCH FREQ. ATTEMPTING TO CALL SOCAL APCH WAS TOLD TO STANDBY. WAITED SEVERAL MINS WHILE FLYING SOUTHERLY HEADING OFFSHORE AND ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT SOCAL AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS TOLD VERY STERNLY TO STANDBY, THEY WOULD CALL ME. I CONSULTED MY LOS ANGELES VFR TERMINAL AREA CHART AND DETERMINED THAT I COULD START A CLB AND REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. VFR CLB WAS MADE TO 9500 FT AND TURN ON HEADING FOR PSP WAS MADE AFTER CONSULTING CHART TO STAY CLR OF CLASS B. WAITED FOR SEVERAL MORE MINS WHILE LISTENING ON SOCAL FREQ AND NOT HEARING ANY MORE XMISSIONS, AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO CHK IN WITH SOCAL. THIS TIME SOCAL TELLS ME THAT THEY FORGOT ABOUT ME (LOTS OF LAUGHTER IN BACKGROUND). 'WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU?' I TOLD THEM THAT I NO LONGER NEEDED THEIR SVC AND THAT I WAS CHANGING FREQ. ARRIVING AT PSP, GND CTL GIVES ME NUMBER TO CALL. I'M THINKING THAT SOCAL IS CALLING TO APOLOGIZE. INSTEAD, I WAS TOLD THAT I ENTERED CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC. I BELIEVE THAT I DIDN'T ENTER THE CLASS B. SOCAL CAN BE DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH AT TIMES.
