Narrative:
Took off from teb runway 24 per teterboro five departure. As we leveled off at 1500 ft the controller, in a rather stern voice, told us to 'stay level at 1500 ft.' (I don't recall the exact words, but we understood it to imply that we were 'busting altitude.') we immediately began rechking our altimeter settings and re-reading the SID and maintaining 1500 ft. On the leveloff, I recall seeing the altimeter approach 1600 ft, but that was our maximum altitude reached. Rechking our altimeter and the SID, caused us to make the turn to 280 degrees later than we otherwise would have, and the controller admonished us for this also. At 4.5 DME we began our climb to 2000 ft as published and accepted departure radar vectors.
