Narrative:
Was taxiing from terminal at lax. We were sitting on taxiway D9 between the terminals and called for taxi clearance. Ground's instructions were, 'taxi to runway 24L, via taxiway D, hold short of D8.' I looked as my taxi chart to determine location of D8, found it, and also saw that the 'D' in D8 was next to a taxiway that I had determined to be taxiway D. (It was in fact taxiway east.) I started taxiing and was getting ready to turn right on what I thought was taxiway 'D' when ground said, 'that's not taxiway 'D,' that's 'east.' there was an aircraft taxiing down taxiway east and once it passed, we were given new instructions. My mistake was not reading the chart correctly along with the fact that we normally use taxiway east instead of taxiway D which is unusual, and started for taxiway east as we normally do. Also first officer is new to aircraft and was working on inputting our weight data into FMGC and didn't notice that I was heading in the wrong direction. Also, I think it would be useful if taxiway designators and arrows were painted on txwys.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TXWY INCURSION BY AN A320 FLT CREW WHEN THE CAPT MISIDENTS THE TXWY DESIGNATION AT LAX, CA.
Narrative: WAS TAXIING FROM TERMINAL AT LAX. WE WERE SITTING ON TXWY D9 BTWN THE TERMINALS AND CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC. GND'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE, 'TAXI TO RWY 24L, VIA TXWY D, HOLD SHORT OF D8.' I LOOKED AS MY TAXI CHART TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF D8, FOUND IT, AND ALSO SAW THAT THE 'D' IN D8 WAS NEXT TO A TXWY THAT I HAD DETERMINED TO BE TXWY D. (IT WAS IN FACT TXWY E.) I STARTED TAXIING AND WAS GETTING READY TO TURN R ON WHAT I THOUGHT WAS TXWY 'D' WHEN GND SAID, 'THAT'S NOT TXWY 'D,' THAT'S 'E.' THERE WAS AN ACFT TAXIING DOWN TXWY E AND ONCE IT PASSED, WE WERE GIVEN NEW INSTRUCTIONS. MY MISTAKE WAS NOT READING THE CHART CORRECTLY ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT WE NORMALLY USE TXWY E INSTEAD OF TXWY D WHICH IS UNUSUAL, AND STARTED FOR TXWY E AS WE NORMALLY DO. ALSO FO IS NEW TO ACFT AND WAS WORKING ON INPUTTING OUR WT DATA INTO FMGC AND DIDN'T NOTICE THAT I WAS HEADING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. ALSO, I THINK IT WOULD BE USEFUL IF TXWY DESIGNATORS AND ARROWS WERE PAINTED ON TXWYS.
