Narrative:
Takeoff -- standard power left engine slow to stabilize. During climb at 12000 ft within 25 DME of sju, heard left engine surge confirmed by EPR 1.4 to 1.7 and N1, egt, N2, 'ff' surging. Aircraft could be felt yawing. Felt like it was getting worse. Captain brought left engine to idle. At captain's command, I declared emergency and flew the aircraft return to sju. We were under VMC conditions. The aircraft was hand flown. Captain was communicating with the flight attendants and passenger. Landing visual landing under maximum landing weight. ATC had called out crash fire rescue equipment. Normal landing and return to the gate. Shut down.
