Narrative:
I taxied to runway 31 and did my run-up checks, then held short of runway 31 on taxiway H, still listening to the ground frequency. My call sign was XXX and I heard 'xxy cleared for takeoff' on the ground frequency, which I thought was my call sign and I lined up on runway 31 and took off. Soon after takeoff, I saw a large aircraft departing runway 4. I then leveled off to avoid a collision with the aircraft. After I was clear of the aircraft, I continued outbound on runway heading. After 1 min, tower called me and requested that I call them when I land. After this, I continued on my heading for about 10 mi. At this point, I turned around and headed back to tyler airport, landed, and taxied back to parking and contacted the tower as requested. Contributing factors: 1) 2 aircraft with similar call signs (XXX and xxy). 2) tower was transmitting over the ground frequency. 3) it was not possible to see another aircraft line up on runway 4. Corrective actions: 1) saw the other aircraft on my left and then leveled off. 2) contacted tower and chief flying instructor when back on the ground. 3) having 2 hours training and a dual chkout with CFI.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF PA28 EXPERIENCES NEAR MISS WITH AN E120 DEPARTING INTERSECTING RWY WHEN HE MISTAKES THE SIMILAR CALL SIGN FOR HIS OWN AND TAKES OFF WITHOUT A CLRNC.
Narrative: I TAXIED TO RWY 31 AND DID MY RUN-UP CHKS, THEN HELD SHORT OF RWY 31 ON TXWY H, STILL LISTENING TO THE GND FREQ. MY CALL SIGN WAS XXX AND I HEARD 'XXY CLRED FOR TKOF' ON THE GND FREQ, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS MY CALL SIGN AND I LINED UP ON RWY 31 AND TOOK OFF. SOON AFTER TKOF, I SAW A LARGE ACFT DEPARTING RWY 4. I THEN LEVELED OFF TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH THE ACFT. AFTER I WAS CLR OF THE ACFT, I CONTINUED OUTBOUND ON RWY HDG. AFTER 1 MIN, TWR CALLED ME AND REQUESTED THAT I CALL THEM WHEN I LAND. AFTER THIS, I CONTINUED ON MY HDG FOR ABOUT 10 MI. AT THIS POINT, I TURNED AROUND AND HEADED BACK TO TYLER ARPT, LANDED, AND TAXIED BACK TO PARKING AND CONTACTED THE TWR AS REQUESTED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) 2 ACFT WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGNS (XXX AND XXY). 2) TWR WAS XMITTING OVER THE GND FREQ. 3) IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO SEE ANOTHER ACFT LINE UP ON RWY 4. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: 1) SAW THE OTHER ACFT ON MY L AND THEN LEVELED OFF. 2) CONTACTED TWR AND CHIEF FLYING INSTRUCTOR WHEN BACK ON THE GND. 3) HAVING 2 HRS TRAINING AND A DUAL CHKOUT WITH CFI.
