Narrative:
Signed student logbook after checking cross country computations. I checked fuel visually and thought level was at the bottom of filler collar, indicating 4 hours fuel for C152. (Aircraft has long range tanks.) after exactly 3 hours of flight, engine quit and student made excellent landing in a field. No damage and aircraft was flown out. Obviously, 1 hour fuel had been used on previous flight and neither I or student detected it. We both will be more careful in the future.
