Narrative:
After landing on runway 21L at dtw, we were given instructions to taxi on taxiway west to taxiway F and hold short of runway 21R. After being cleared to cross runway 21R, we were cleared to taxi to park. However, we were advised to hold off the ramp due to an airplane at our gate that would be pushing back soon. First officer advised ground. Ground told us to taxi to the alleyway and hold there. Not sure where the 'alleyway' was, I stopped at the juncture of taxiway F, V, and H just south of terminal X. It was extremely dark and I saw an airplane coming out of the ramp area where we were supposed to go in. As that airplane called for taxi and exited the ramp area, ground called and told us we were on a taxiway and should taxi in to the ramp after the other airplane cleared. We then taxied to the ramp and held until our gate opened. Ground made no further mention of the incident. We should have asked for specific instructions to clarify where the alleyway was. The most confusing part about trying to find a spot to hold out of the way was actually the ramp and its markings. Once on the ramp we saw several sets of yellow dashed lines. Because it was dark and we were unfamiliar with dtw, we were not sure where on the ramp we could go without causing more problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 CREW WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO THE 'ALLEYWAY' IN DTW. THE CREW DID NOT KNOW WHERE THE 'ALLEYWAY' WAS AND THE GND CTLR DID NOT EXPLAIN WHERE IT WAS.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 21L AT DTW, WE WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI ON TXWY W TO TXWY F AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 21R. AFTER BEING CLRED TO CROSS RWY 21R, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO PARK. HOWEVER, WE WERE ADVISED TO HOLD OFF THE RAMP DUE TO AN AIRPLANE AT OUR GATE THAT WOULD BE PUSHING BACK SOON. FO ADVISED GND. GND TOLD US TO TAXI TO THE ALLEYWAY AND HOLD THERE. NOT SURE WHERE THE 'ALLEYWAY' WAS, I STOPPED AT THE JUNCTURE OF TXWY F, V, AND H JUST S OF TERMINAL X. IT WAS EXTREMELY DARK AND I SAW AN AIRPLANE COMING OUT OF THE RAMP AREA WHERE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO IN. AS THAT AIRPLANE CALLED FOR TAXI AND EXITED THE RAMP AREA, GND CALLED AND TOLD US WE WERE ON A TXWY AND SHOULD TAXI IN TO THE RAMP AFTER THE OTHER AIRPLANE CLRED. WE THEN TAXIED TO THE RAMP AND HELD UNTIL OUR GATE OPENED. GND MADE NO FURTHER MENTION OF THE INCIDENT. BECAUSE IT WAS DARK AND WE WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH DTW, WE WERE NOT SURE WHERE ON THE RAMP WE COULD GO WITHOUT CAUSING MORE PROBS.
