Narrative:
Approximately 3 1/2 hours out of hnl, we smelled cigarette smoke in the aft galley area. I checked the 2 l-hand side aft lavatories and determined it was not originating from there. I walked up the l-hand side aisle and could not pinpoint where it was coming from. I went to the forward galley area, where they also smelled it. I went back to the mid galley area and checked the mid l-hand side lavatory. That is where someone had been smoking. There was a very strong odor of cigarette smoke, like someone had smoked at least 1 whole cigarette -- not just a few puffs. Several passenger in the area of the lavatory pointed out the smoker. The #1 flight attendant spoke with him and said his clothing and breath smelled very strongly of cigarette smoke. Upon inspection of the lavatory, we found that the passenger had put wet towels in the smoke detector to prevent it from detecting smoke. The cockpit called and requested that we be met by law enforcement and company supervisors. We were met by 2 policemen and several supervisors.

Title: A B767-300 FLT ATTENDANT RPTED THAT A PAX HAD DISABLED A SMOKE DETECTOR AND HAD BEEN SMOKING DURING A FLT FROM HNL TO DFW.
Narrative: APPROX 3 1/2 HRS OUT OF HNL, WE SMELLED CIGARETTE SMOKE IN THE AFT GALLEY AREA. I CHKED THE 2 L-HAND SIDE AFT LAVATORIES AND DETERMINED IT WAS NOT ORIGINATING FROM THERE. I WALKED UP THE L-HAND SIDE AISLE AND COULD NOT PINPOINT WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. I WENT TO THE FORWARD GALLEY AREA, WHERE THEY ALSO SMELLED IT. I WENT BACK TO THE MID GALLEY AREA AND CHKED THE MID L-HAND SIDE LAVATORY. THAT IS WHERE SOMEONE HAD BEEN SMOKING. THERE WAS A VERY STRONG ODOR OF CIGARETTE SMOKE, LIKE SOMEONE HAD SMOKED AT LEAST 1 WHOLE CIGARETTE -- NOT JUST A FEW PUFFS. SEVERAL PAX IN THE AREA OF THE LAVATORY POINTED OUT THE SMOKER. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT SPOKE WITH HIM AND SAID HIS CLOTHING AND BREATH SMELLED VERY STRONGLY OF CIGARETTE SMOKE. UPON INSPECTION OF THE LAVATORY, WE FOUND THAT THE PAX HAD PUT WET TOWELS IN THE SMOKE DETECTOR TO PREVENT IT FROM DETECTING SMOKE. THE COCKPIT CALLED AND REQUESTED THAT WE BE MET BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COMPANY SUPVRS. WE WERE MET BY 2 POLICEMEN AND SEVERAL SUPVRS.
