Narrative:
After landing on runway 28, I was instructed to exit runway 28 on taxiway B. Ended up 'missing' taxiway B taxied clear on a instead. Tower phraseology left a lot to be desired. Taxiway B does not actually intersect runway 28. Correct instructions would be of the form 'taxi clear of runway 28 on runway 4, left onto taxiway B, then contact ground.' local inquiries lead me to believe that everyone from out of town falls for this trap. Strongly suggest advising tower personnel to issue complete instructions or to expect that a large fraction of transient pilots will miss taxiway B. Roll out is not an appropriate time to expect pilots to refer to their airport diagram, or to ask for progressive taxi instructions. Tower controller has to issue clear instructions or safety suffers.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT RPTS THAT SCH ATCT LCL CTLR CLRED HIM TO EXIT RWY 28 ON TXWY BRAVO WHICH DOESN'T INTERSECT THE RWY.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 28, I WAS INSTRUCTED TO EXIT RWY 28 ON TXWY B. ENDED UP 'MISSING' TXWY B TAXIED CLR ON A INSTEAD. TWR PHRASEOLOGY LEFT A LOT TO BE DESIRED. TXWY B DOES NOT ACTUALLY INTERSECT RWY 28. CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS WOULD BE OF THE FORM 'TAXI CLR OF RWY 28 ON RWY 4, LEFT ONTO TXWY B, THEN CONTACT GND.' LOCAL INQUIRIES LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE FROM OUT OF TOWN FALLS FOR THIS TRAP. STRONGLY SUGGEST ADVISING TWR PERSONNEL TO ISSUE COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS OR TO EXPECT THAT A LARGE FRACTION OF TRANSIENT PLTS WILL MISS TXWY B. ROLL OUT IS NOT AN APPROPRIATE TIME TO EXPECT PLTS TO REFER TO THEIR ARPT DIAGRAM, OR TO ASK FOR PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. TWR CTLR HAS TO ISSUE CLR INSTRUCTIONS OR SAFETY SUFFERS.
