Narrative:
Aircraft was on MOD3 arrival into sfo at 320 IAS, 16000 ft descending to cross cedes at 11000 ft. 7 mi from groan intersection, ATC issued holding instructions at groan intersection due to runway change at sfo. We were then cleared to sfo via the locke arrival. Locke arrival page was located and holding course was selected just prior to groan intersection. Aircraft began right turn and ATC called us and told us the direction of turn was left. We asked for permission to do one right turn and then continue the hold. ATC rogered ok and after a half turn vectored us to runway 19L. We performed everything correctly in the short time before the hold except the direction. On the MOD3 the holding turn is right and on the locke it is left. Lesson learned on short holding clrncs. Supplemental information from acn 599072: by the time the intersection was in the FMS we were at groan intersection. The airplane executed a right turn in holding -- by default. The locke one arrival depicts left hand turns at groan.

Title: B767 ENTERS HOLDING IN WRONG DIRECTION DURING RWY CHANGE AT SFO.
Narrative: ACFT WAS ON MOD3 ARR INTO SFO AT 320 IAS, 16000 FT DSNDING TO CROSS CEDES AT 11000 FT. 7 MI FROM GROAN INTXN, ATC ISSUED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS AT GROAN INTXN DUE TO RWY CHANGE AT SFO. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO SFO VIA THE LOCKE ARR. LOCKE ARR PAGE WAS LOCATED AND HOLDING COURSE WAS SELECTED JUST PRIOR TO GROAN INTXN. ACFT BEGAN R TURN AND ATC CALLED US AND TOLD US THE DIRECTION OF TURN WAS L. WE ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO DO ONE R TURN AND THEN CONTINUE THE HOLD. ATC ROGERED OK AND AFTER A HALF TURN VECTORED US TO RWY 19L. WE PERFORMED EVERYTHING CORRECTLY IN THE SHORT TIME BEFORE THE HOLD EXCEPT THE DIRECTION. ON THE MOD3 THE HOLDING TURN IS R AND ON THE LOCKE IT IS L. LESSON LEARNED ON SHORT HOLDING CLRNCS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 599072: BY THE TIME THE INTXN WAS IN THE FMS WE WERE AT GROAN INTXN. THE AIRPLANE EXECUTED A R TURN IN HOLDING -- BY DEFAULT. THE LOCKE ONE ARR DEPICTS L HAND TURNS AT GROAN.
