Narrative:
Approaching our destination, jyo, and entering the local traffic pattern, we cancelled our IFR clearance and changed to the local CTAF. The copilot, without instruction from ATC or myself, changed the transponder code to 1200, which is not the correct procedure while in the tfr (ADIZ). I focused outside the airplane, as I was flying, and there were a couple of airplanes I had to work in with to get in the traffic pattern. The transponder is on a lower center pedestal in this aircraft, outside of one's peripheral vision if one is looking outside. The copilot did not say he was changing the transponder code to 1200. I discovered the transponder code while I was picking up our outbound clearance. The copilot stated that he had done it by habit and he had put in a lot of hours that week. Supplemental information from acn 599132: we were clear for the visual approach and told to switch to CTAF and to contact approach to cancel IFR. Airport was in sight and we canceled IFR upon entering traffic pattern. Changed transponder to 1200 out of habit from normal operations.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE400 FO FORGETS THE WASHINGTON TFR PROC AND SWITCH THE XPONDER TO 1200 BEFORE LNDG.
Narrative: APCHING OUR DEST, JYO, AND ENTERING THE LCL TFC PATTERN, WE CANCELLED OUR IFR CLRNC AND CHANGED TO THE LCL CTAF. THE COPLT, WITHOUT INSTRUCTION FROM ATC OR MYSELF, CHANGED THE XPONDER CODE TO 1200, WHICH IS NOT THE CORRECT PROC WHILE IN THE TFR (ADIZ). I FOCUSED OUTSIDE THE AIRPLANE, AS I WAS FLYING, AND THERE WERE A COUPLE OF AIRPLANES I HAD TO WORK IN WITH TO GET IN THE TFC PATTERN. THE XPONDER IS ON A LOWER CTR PEDESTAL IN THIS ACFT, OUTSIDE OF ONE'S PERIPHERAL VISION IF ONE IS LOOKING OUTSIDE. THE COPLT DID NOT SAY HE WAS CHANGING THE XPONDER CODE TO 1200. I DISCOVERED THE XPONDER CODE WHILE I WAS PICKING UP OUR OUTBOUND CLRNC. THE COPLT STATED THAT HE HAD DONE IT BY HABIT AND HE HAD PUT IN A LOT OF HRS THAT WK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 599132: WE WERE CLR FOR THE VISUAL APCH AND TOLD TO SWITCH TO CTAF AND TO CONTACT APCH TO CANCEL IFR. ARPT WAS IN SIGHT AND WE CANCELED IFR UPON ENTERING TFC PATTERN. CHANGED XPONDER TO 1200 OUT OF HABIT FROM NORMAL OPS.
