Narrative:

After departure, I was cleared SVFR to the north for a routine homeland security patrol. I flew north along the harvey canal and then departed class D. On my outbound call, I did advise navy tower I'd be checking on again when sbound. Once on the mississippi river, we began sighting targets of interest operating 300 ft and below. Generally, WX was good, but definitely MVFR. Intermittent visibility conditions of 1-2 mi did occur, but overall, the WX was not a primary factor. I'm very familiar with my area, but I allowed myself to become complacent and dropped my guard with regards to situational awareness. Secondary to this was the poor visibility and winding river. Nevertheless, on the sbound portion, I stumbled into class D unannounced, and before I realized it, I was nearly right up on the airport. One I realized my error, I immediately contacted the tower and requested SVFR, to continue my patrol sbound 300 ft and below. They approved my request and I subsequently proceeded without further incident.
