Narrative:
I was captain of this flight and was doing IOE on a new captain who was a former first officer on the emb also from the northeast. Taxiing out to runway 4L for departure. Instructed taxi rb, taxiway D, short of runway 4L. Taxiing out on rb approaching PA, I looked down to the communication #1 to change frequency. When I looked up, I informed the IOE student that he made a wrong turn and turned early before taxiway D. We corrected this and I instructed the captain to turn right on taxiway D and hold short of runway 4L. The flight attendant called and I reached up to select the call button to answer the flight attendant. The IOE captain missed the turn and continued and turned onto runway 4L. Tower asked if we were on runway 4L and I had to unfortunately say -- yes. We were instructed take next right then left and hold short of runway 4L. Then we were given takeoff clearance. Supplemental information from acn 600900: I missed the turn onto taxiway D and made a right turn onto flight engineer on the ramp east of cargo operations. I did not hear my IOE captain say turn right, then right. I made the left turn at pb, then made the right turn onto the runway. The ground controller asked, 'hey XXX, you on the runway?' we said, 'ah, yeah.' he said to make the next left, then the next left to runway 4L. As we were cleared onto runway 4L, the tower controller said, 'ground said not to worry about it,' whatever that means.

Title: RWY INCURSION OCCURS WHEN A STUDENT CAPT TAXIES ONTO RWY 4L AFTER BEING TOLD TO HOLD SHORT ON TXWY D AT EWR, NJ.
Narrative: I WAS CAPT OF THIS FLT AND WAS DOING IOE ON A NEW CAPT WHO WAS A FORMER FO ON THE EMB ALSO FROM THE NE. TAXIING OUT TO RWY 4L FOR DEP. INSTRUCTED TAXI RB, TXWY D, SHORT OF RWY 4L. TAXIING OUT ON RB APCHING PA, I LOOKED DOWN TO THE COM #1 TO CHANGE FREQ. WHEN I LOOKED UP, I INFORMED THE IOE STUDENT THAT HE MADE A WRONG TURN AND TURNED EARLY BEFORE TXWY D. WE CORRECTED THIS AND I INSTRUCTED THE CAPT TO TURN R ON TXWY D AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4L. THE FLT ATTENDANT CALLED AND I REACHED UP TO SELECT THE CALL BUTTON TO ANSWER THE FLT ATTENDANT. THE IOE CAPT MISSED THE TURN AND CONTINUED AND TURNED ONTO RWY 4L. TWR ASKED IF WE WERE ON RWY 4L AND I HAD TO UNFORTUNATELY SAY -- YES. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TAKE NEXT R THEN L AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4L. THEN WE WERE GIVEN TKOF CLRNC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 600900: I MISSED THE TURN ONTO TXWY D AND MADE A R TURN ONTO FE ON THE RAMP E OF CARGO OPS. I DID NOT HEAR MY IOE CAPT SAY TURN R, THEN R. I MADE THE L TURN AT PB, THEN MADE THE R TURN ONTO THE RWY. THE GND CTLR ASKED, 'HEY XXX, YOU ON THE RWY?' WE SAID, 'AH, YEAH.' HE SAID TO MAKE THE NEXT L, THEN THE NEXT L TO RWY 4L. AS WE WERE CLRED ONTO RWY 4L, THE TWR CTLR SAID, 'GND SAID NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT,' WHATEVER THAT MEANS.
