Narrative:

Arriving cvg from the northeast, we were receiving vectors for a runway 18R approach. I observed the first officer (PF) reset the altitude preselector and heading bug for a descending turn. I did not hear this clearance and told the first officer to maintain current altitude and heading until I confirmed our clearance with ATC. (Technical note: the transmit selector knob also determines the radio on which you will receive.) simultaneously, I reached down to verify the audio control panel #1 transmit selector knob was set to VHF #1. It was. But ATC could only be heard after wiggling the knob. I verified the clearance as soon as frequency congestion would allow, and we promptly complied. While complying, we received the TCASII TA. We were wbound and the dornier passed by our left side heading eastbound. No one mentioned the occurrence. After parking at the gate, the audio control panel #1 transmit selector knob fault was documented and demonstrated to the avionics technician. The audio control panel #1 was replaced.

Title: A CL65 CAPT, PNF, INSTRUCTED THE FO, PF, TO MAINTAIN COURSE AND ALT EVEN THOUGH FO HEARD DAY ISSUE NEW CLRNC.

Narrative: ARRIVING CVG FROM THE NE, WE WERE RECEIVING VECTORS FOR A RWY 18R APCH. I OBSERVED THE FO (PF) RESET THE ALT PRESELECTOR AND HDG BUG FOR A DSNDING TURN. I DID NOT HEAR THIS CLRNC AND TOLD THE FO TO MAINTAIN CURRENT ALT AND HDG UNTIL I CONFIRMED OUR CLRNC WITH ATC. (TECHNICAL NOTE: THE XMIT SELECTOR KNOB ALSO DETERMINES THE RADIO ON WHICH YOU WILL RECEIVE.) SIMULTANEOUSLY, I REACHED DOWN TO VERIFY THE AUDIO CTL PANEL #1 XMIT SELECTOR KNOB WAS SET TO VHF #1. IT WAS. BUT ATC COULD ONLY BE HEARD AFTER WIGGLING THE KNOB. I VERIFIED THE CLRNC AS SOON AS FREQ CONGESTION WOULD ALLOW, AND WE PROMPTLY COMPLIED. WHILE COMPLYING, WE RECEIVED THE TCASII TA. WE WERE WBOUND AND THE DORNIER PASSED BY OUR L SIDE HEADING EBOUND. NO ONE MENTIONED THE OCCURRENCE. AFTER PARKING AT THE GATE, THE AUDIO CTL PANEL #1 XMIT SELECTOR KNOB FAULT WAS DOCUMENTED AND DEMONSTRATED TO THE AVIONICS TECHNICIAN. THE AUDIO CTL PANEL #1 WAS REPLACED.
