Narrative:
Approximately 5 mins after takeoff, captain called on interphone stating there was an electrical problem in cockpit, and we were returning to pdx. He advised us that this would be a normal non-emergency landing (no need to prepare for planned emergency landing). Captain made announcement to passenger stating same. A short time later, captain called back to flight attendants reiterating that he was anticipating normal landing, but said several rescue vehicles would be following aircraft as precautionary measure. Perfect landing by first officer. Passenger remained on aircraft while mechanics were evaluating problem, but were eventually deplaned. Another aircraft ferried in from sjc to replace original equipment. 2 female passenger told me and #4 flight attendant that they thought they smelled a 'burning smell' after takeoff, but #4 flight attendant and I attributed this to fearful situation. #4 flight attendant and I smelled nothing out of the ordinary. I'd like to commend our captain for excellent communication of information as well as our first officer's smooth handling of aircraft!

Title: AN MD80 FLT ATTENDANT RPTED THAT SHE WAS NOTIFIED ABOUT AN ELECTRICAL PROB IN THE COCKPIT WHICH CAUSED THE CAPT TO RETURN TO PDX.
Narrative: APPROX 5 MINS AFTER TKOF, CAPT CALLED ON INTERPHONE STATING THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROB IN COCKPIT, AND WE WERE RETURNING TO PDX. HE ADVISED US THAT THIS WOULD BE A NORMAL NON-EMER LNDG (NO NEED TO PREPARE FOR PLANNED EMER LNDG). CAPT MADE ANNOUNCEMENT TO PAX STATING SAME. A SHORT TIME LATER, CAPT CALLED BACK TO FLT ATTENDANTS REITERATING THAT HE WAS ANTICIPATING NORMAL LNDG, BUT SAID SEVERAL RESCUE VEHICLES WOULD BE FOLLOWING ACFT AS PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE.
