Narrative:
Within seconds of leveloff, the aircraft autoplt ran forward trim in the dropped out of altitude hold. Aircraft pitch down and 800 ft was lost effecting recovery. First officer, flying the leg, rotated a smooth climb back to altitude. The center was informed (frequency 128.52). There seemed to be no problem with ATC. The aircraft has a long list of problems, including on the autoplt 'a' servo recent work compelled us to use it and do a CAT status check. Supplemental information from acn 602450: first officer saw it, disconnected autoplt. Aircraft autoplt was written up.
