Narrative:
After crossing the airport at night our aircraft was cleared to our ramp area after crossing runway 21L via taxiway S5. While still on S5 and approaching S4 my first officer exclaimed that an aircraft was rapidly approaching the intersecting txwys at the same time. The txwys coverage at an angle, so we did not see the aircraft until the very last. We were surprised because ground control never informed us that another aircraft was in the vicinity, and we never heard the aircraft on ground control. It appeared out of nowhere at night. We added speed quickly and we saw the galaxy apply brakes -- or a collision would have occurred. It became clear that both aircraft were on 2 different frequencys and that both were cleared into the ramp areas. Contributing factors were nighttime, and a breakdown of ATC procedures in the taxiway system leading to the ramp area on the east side of dtw. To prevent a close call like this in the future would be to keep your head on a swivel at night even when you believe you are the only aircraft operating in the area.

Title: BE30 TAXIING TO PARKING AT DTW EXPERIENCES NEAR COLLISION WITH OTHER ACFT.
Narrative: AFTER XING THE ARPT AT NIGHT OUR ACFT WAS CLRED TO OUR RAMP AREA AFTER XING RWY 21L VIA TXWY S5. WHILE STILL ON S5 AND APCHING S4 MY FO EXCLAIMED THAT AN ACFT WAS RAPIDLY APCHING THE INTERSECTING TXWYS AT THE SAME TIME. THE TXWYS COVERAGE AT AN ANGLE, SO WE DID NOT SEE THE ACFT UNTIL THE VERY LAST. WE WERE SURPRISED BECAUSE GND CTL NEVER INFORMED US THAT ANOTHER ACFT WAS IN THE VICINITY, AND WE NEVER HEARD THE ACFT ON GND CTL. IT APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE AT NIGHT. WE ADDED SPD QUICKLY AND WE SAW THE GALAXY APPLY BRAKES -- OR A COLLISION WOULD HAVE OCCURRED. IT BECAME CLR THAT BOTH ACFT WERE ON 2 DIFFERENT FREQS AND THAT BOTH WERE CLRED INTO THE RAMP AREAS. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE NIGHTTIME, AND A BREAKDOWN OF ATC PROCS IN THE TXWY SYS LEADING TO THE RAMP AREA ON THE E SIDE OF DTW. TO PREVENT A CLOSE CALL LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE WOULD BE TO KEEP YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL AT NIGHT EVEN WHEN YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE THE ONLY ACFT OPERATING IN THE AREA.
