Narrative:

At the end of a flight from sfz to frg, I experienced 2 engine misfires. The second occurred about the time I was reporting my entry to a right downwind pattern. The distraction caused me to swing wide and over the runway but about 100-200 ft above pattern altitude. This caused me to fly over the approach end of the runway. Planes were on final. The tower advised me to correct my course and that I was over the approach end. I diverted left immediately and followed vectors to final. I observed 1 plane on final 500-700 ft below me. No instructions were issued by the tower to plane on final to avoid me. I assume this was because there was no imminent danger of collision. In retrospect, I should have made the tower aware of my engine problem.

IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE MADE THE TWR AWARE OF MY ENG PROB.
