Narrative:
On climb out from ZZZ en route to ZZZ1, the autothrottles disengaged. I then noticed that the #2 thrust lever was at idle with all engine instruments indicating full power. N1, N2, and egt were in the caution range. After leveloff at FL220, the non-normal checklist for engine limit/surge/stall was accomplished and the #2 engine shutdown. I made the decision to continue to ZZZ1 based on runway length available, familiarity with the airport, and crash fire rescue equipment capability, rather than spiral down and land at ZZZ2. Approximately 20 mins later, after declaring an emergency with ATC and informing company maintenance and dispatch via ACARS, an uneventful single engine landing was accomplished in ZZZ1. The engine was subsequently removed and is being analyzed for cause of malfunction at this time.

Title: A B737-200 AT LEVELOFF AT FL220 DECLARED AN EMER DUE TO #2 ENG INFLT SHUTDOWN, CAUSED BY N1 AND N2 ENG OVERSPD LIMITS EXCEEDED.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM ZZZ ENRTE TO ZZZ1, THE AUTOTHROTTLES DISENGAGED. I THEN NOTICED THAT THE #2 THRUST LEVER WAS AT IDLE WITH ALL ENG INSTS INDICATING FULL PWR. N1, N2, AND EGT WERE IN THE CAUTION RANGE. AFTER LEVELOFF AT FL220, THE NON-NORMAL CHKLIST FOR ENG LIMIT/SURGE/STALL WAS ACCOMPLISHED AND THE #2 ENG SHUTDOWN. I MADE THE DECISION TO CONTINUE TO ZZZ1 BASED ON RWY LENGTH AVAILABLE, FAMILIARITY WITH THE ARPT, AND CFR CAPABILITY, RATHER THAN SPIRAL DOWN AND LAND AT ZZZ2. APPROX 20 MINS LATER, AFTER DECLARING AN EMER WITH ATC AND INFORMING COMPANY MAINT AND DISPATCH VIA ACARS, AN UNEVENTFUL SINGLE ENG LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN ZZZ1. THE ENG WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REMOVED AND IS BEING ANALYZED FOR CAUSE OF MALFUNCTION AT THIS TIME.
