Narrative:

While being vectored by ZMA, we were told of a C172 at 1 O'clock position and 6500 ft. We were in a descent. My first officer saw the traffic about 100 ft above the C172's altitude. I was manipulating the controls and immediately disconnected the autoplt and leveled off. During this maneuver ATC advised us again of the traffic. We then advised ATC of the near miss. I was surprised that this vector was given since the C172 was participating VFR.
