Narrative:
Positioned flight kissimmee (ism) to charleston (chs). Climbing out of kissimmee, we were given intermediate climb from 4000 ft to 7000 ft. At 5000 ft, aircraft started to shake with 3-4 loud bangs. This was accompanied by a burning smell. Engine instruments indicated r-hand engine N1 fluctuation back and forth between approximately 85% and 95%. It was abnormally high. Left engine instruments indicated normal range for power setting. PF determined r-hand engine problem and reduced r-hand thrust to flight idle. Engine indications and smell persisted. After approximately 10 seconds, PF shut down r-hand engine as precaution. After shutdown, vibration and smell ceased. Appropriate checklists were completed and diversion to orlando (mco) was executed. Upon landing, r-hand engine thrust lever was pulled out to assist in thrust reverser deployment. Left engine was then shut down.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LJ60 CREW HAD A #2 ENG FAILURE REQUIRING A DIVERSION.
Narrative: POSITIONED FLT KISSIMMEE (ISM) TO CHARLESTON (CHS). CLBING OUT OF KISSIMMEE, WE WERE GIVEN INTERMEDIATE CLB FROM 4000 FT TO 7000 FT. AT 5000 FT, ACFT STARTED TO SHAKE WITH 3-4 LOUD BANGS. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A BURNING SMELL. ENG INSTS INDICATED R-HAND ENG N1 FLUCTUATION BACK AND FORTH BTWN APPROX 85% AND 95%. IT WAS ABNORMALLY HIGH. L ENG INSTS INDICATED NORMAL RANGE FOR PWR SETTING. PF DETERMINED R-HAND ENG PROB AND REDUCED R-HAND THRUST TO FLT IDLE. ENG INDICATIONS AND SMELL PERSISTED. AFTER APPROX 10 SECONDS, PF SHUT DOWN R-HAND ENG AS PRECAUTION. AFTER SHUTDOWN, VIBRATION AND SMELL CEASED. APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED AND DIVERSION TO ORLANDO (MCO) WAS EXECUTED. UPON LNDG, R-HAND ENG THRUST LEVER WAS PULLED OUT TO ASSIST IN THRUST REVERSER DEPLOYMENT. L ENG WAS THEN SHUT DOWN.
