Narrative:

I was asked to provide sic duties on a part 91 ferry flight of a dhc-8 aircraft. I had never flown this type, but was assured that I was legal for the flight. I reviewed the regulation far 61-155, which stated that I must be familiar with the aircraft, so I familiarized myself with it. After the flight, I had second thoughts and am not sure of the intent of the regulation. We did suffer an engine failure of the left engine on approach to the rap airport, but the emergency was handled by the book and completed successfully.
