Narrative:
Being vectored in marginal conditions for VOR/GPS 9 lal. Told to maintain 1400 ft for approach. Asked for radar identify of the FAF (aimie) and was told they would be unable. I was at 1400 ft and perfectly established on inbound course when I received a partially broken call. Heard call sign and aimie and at same time had a visual on runway, so started down to MDA. Moments later, received 'altitude alert' call from ATC 'check altitude' (800 ft MSL) (visibility +/-6 mi). Started climb back to 1400 ft MSL to review situation. Wrong airport! Climbed to 1400 ft, continued on inbound to airport (lal was not in view during first descent, low visibility).
