Narrative:
We were cleared by ground control to taxi to runway 30L, hold short of runway 3, expect full length departure. One aircraft was ahead of us on runway 3 holding short of runway 30L. As we approached runway 3, ground instructed us to turn left at the next taxiway (just prior to runway 3), plan on departing ahead of the aircraft in front of us, expect to back-taxi for a full length departure and to switch to the tower frequency. The captain slowed his taxi speed and made the left turn. I was switching the radio to the tower frequency when I observed that we were crossing the runway hold short line. I immediately advised the captain that we were not cleared onto the runway. The captain stopped the aircraft and transmitted to the tower that we were across the runway hold short line. The tower ordered the aircraft on final approach to go around. We were then cleared by tower to back-taxi full length and cleared for takeoff. Supplemental information from acn 607734: had I been rushing to comply with the checklist and flight attendant takeoff PA and missed the hold portion of the clearance? Lesson learned: when it's dark and there is WX, extra caution must be taken to slow the checklist procedures and taxi only after confirming with each other the route and hold points.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW INADVERTENTLY CROSS THE RWY HOLD LINE WITHOUT A CLRNC.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED BY GND CTL TO TAXI TO RWY 30L, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3, EXPECT FULL LENGTH DEP. ONE ACFT WAS AHEAD OF US ON RWY 3 HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 30L. AS WE APCHED RWY 3, GND INSTRUCTED US TO TURN L AT THE NEXT TXWY (JUST PRIOR TO RWY 3), PLAN ON DEPARTING AHEAD OF THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US, EXPECT TO BACK-TAXI FOR A FULL LENGTH DEP AND TO SWITCH TO THE TWR FREQ. THE CAPT SLOWED HIS TAXI SPD AND MADE THE L TURN. I WAS SWITCHING THE RADIO TO THE TWR FREQ WHEN I OBSERVED THAT WE WERE XING THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE. I IMMEDIATELY ADVISED THE CAPT THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED ONTO THE RWY. THE CAPT STOPPED THE ACFT AND XMITTED TO THE TWR THAT WE WERE ACROSS THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE. THE TWR ORDERED THE ACFT ON FINAL APCH TO GO AROUND. WE WERE THEN CLRED BY TWR TO BACK-TAXI FULL LENGTH AND CLRED FOR TKOF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 607734: HAD I BEEN RUSHING TO COMPLY WITH THE CHKLIST AND FLT ATTENDANT TKOF PA AND MISSED THE HOLD PORTION OF THE CLRNC? LESSON LEARNED: WHEN IT'S DARK AND THERE IS WX, EXTRA CAUTION MUST BE TAKEN TO SLOW THE CHKLIST PROCS AND TAXI ONLY AFTER CONFIRMING WITH EACH OTHER THE RTE AND HOLD POINTS.
