Narrative:

We had leveled off at 9000 ft and 250 KTS at krena intersection, then going direct ord. Suddenly, the aircraft (while on autoplt) went into a 30 degree bank turn to the left. I kicked off the autoplt, leveled the wings and the aircraft then went into a 30 degree bank to the right. During the bank, I attempted to level the wings, added power and initiated a climb. At 9360 ft, I leveled off and advised ATC that we had encountered heavy wake turbulence and had leveled off at 9360 ft, but were returning to 9000 ft at that time. Our speed had increased to 263 KTS of which ATC was advised. ATC told us that we had 8 mi on the heavy aircraft in front, but then proceeded to give us more spacing. The rest of the approach and landing was uneventful. I must say that the wake encounter felt very much like what we experience in training, and helped me identify the situation quickly.

Title: B757-200 CREW HAD A WAKE TURB ENCOUNTER WITH A HVY ACFT 8 MI AHEAD WHILE ON APCH TO ORD.

Narrative: WE HAD LEVELED OFF AT 9000 FT AND 250 KTS AT KRENA INTXN, THEN GOING DIRECT ORD. SUDDENLY, THE ACFT (WHILE ON AUTOPLT) WENT INTO A 30 DEG BANK TURN TO THE L. I KICKED OFF THE AUTOPLT, LEVELED THE WINGS AND THE ACFT THEN WENT INTO A 30 DEG BANK TO THE R. DURING THE BANK, I ATTEMPTED TO LEVEL THE WINGS, ADDED PWR AND INITIATED A CLB. AT 9360 FT, I LEVELED OFF AND ADVISED ATC THAT WE HAD ENCOUNTERED HVY WAKE TURB AND HAD LEVELED OFF AT 9360 FT, BUT WERE RETURNING TO 9000 FT AT THAT TIME. OUR SPD HAD INCREASED TO 263 KTS OF WHICH ATC WAS ADVISED. ATC TOLD US THAT WE HAD 8 MI ON THE HVY ACFT IN FRONT, BUT THEN PROCEEDED TO GIVE US MORE SPACING. THE REST OF THE APCH AND LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. I MUST SAY THAT THE WAKE ENCOUNTER FELT VERY MUCH LIKE WHAT WE EXPERIENCE IN TRAINING, AND HELPED ME IDENT THE SIT QUICKLY.
