Narrative:
Potomac approach took us off airway and cleared us direct staut NDB at shd airport for the visual approach. Approaching staut, we called the field in sight and ATC cleared us for the visual approach. We started out of 6000 ft, canceled IFR, and switched to unicom. Our TCASII immediately alarmed 'traffic, traffic.' we looked at TCASII, and traffic was 9 O'clock position and less than 1 mi, climbing rapidly. The TCASII then immediately alarmed with an RA commanding us to descend. We took evasive action and saw traffic pass off our nose at a rapid ascent. ATC had not told us of any traffic nor had anyone reported position on unicom. TCASII reported clear of conflict and flight continued normally and we landed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B190 FO, PNF, RPTED THAT THE CAPT COMPLIED WITH A TCASII RA DURING APCH TO AN UNCTLED FIELD, SHD.
Narrative: POTOMAC APCH TOOK US OFF AIRWAY AND CLRED US DIRECT STAUT NDB AT SHD ARPT FOR THE VISUAL APCH. APCHING STAUT, WE CALLED THE FIELD IN SIGHT AND ATC CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH. WE STARTED OUT OF 6000 FT, CANCELED IFR, AND SWITCHED TO UNICOM. OUR TCASII IMMEDIATELY ALARMED 'TFC, TFC.' WE LOOKED AT TCASII, AND TFC WAS 9 O'CLOCK POS AND LESS THAN 1 MI, CLBING RAPIDLY. THE TCASII THEN IMMEDIATELY ALARMED WITH AN RA COMMANDING US TO DSND. WE TOOK EVASIVE ACTION AND SAW TFC PASS OFF OUR NOSE AT A RAPID ASCENT. ATC HAD NOT TOLD US OF ANY TFC NOR HAD ANYONE RPTED POS ON UNICOM. TCASII RPTED CLR OF CONFLICT AND FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY AND WE LANDED.
