Narrative:

While departing vny on fairly complicated SID procedure on climb out ATC requested we turn to a heading, intercept a radial, track it outbound resume the departure, the radial was not part of the SID. The FMS named an intersection different than on the plate, prior to getting the FMS programmed and frequency changed and aircraft turned our heading was changed and we were given a phone number to call. I believe we could have turned aircraft faster but I also believe the SID should not be labeled as it is and the frequency and congestion definitely was a factor because the controller whose sector we switched on to never said anything until we were going the wrong way for a short while. We got the aircraft turned and nothing became of it, however it could have been done better.
