Narrative:

I departed americus, GA (acj) en route to prn in greenville, al. As I was headed west into the sun, the smoke was tremendous from all the forest fires and the sun glaring through the smoke. My flight plan put me into eufaula, al, at about 30 mins and I was supposed to be over greenville, al, at an additional 48 mins. After flying at 3500 ft for an additional 40 mins, I had not seen either the clayton, al, or the troy, al, airports. As I flew west, I noticed a major ns highway, which I thought was highway 231 and an airport to my north. I thought it was the troy airport and my radio was tuned to 122.8, the troy frequency. I entered the downwind for the troy airport and announced my position and intentions to land and turned on my landing lights and turned base and final for the ew runway 28 and announced at each turn. As I landed, I noticed the hangars with signs that said alabama air national guard and I immediately knew that I was in montgomery at dannelly field. The ns highway that I saw was interstate 65. I taxied off the runway and returned to the far eastern end of the airport, so I could get my bearings and the montgomery control tower frequencys on the atlanta chart. Just as I found the frequency and tuned it, the tower was talking to me and I responded. At that time, the airport security guard was beside me and asked me to shut the plane down and come to his vehicle. I explained that I was disoriented and I thought I was landing at troy, al. I explained that I was headed to greenville, al, and they made sure that I was ok. The runway in use was runway 10 and to continue with my flight to greenville and gave me a squawk code, so they could provide flight following to greenville. I taxied back and took off, followed the instructions of departure control and, in about 20 mins, they told me that I should see greenville about 10 mi at my 12 O'clock position. I responded that I had greenville in sight and they released me. I landed and tied down the plane. The next morning, I fueled up and departed. I returned to home base safely.
