Narrative:
Left engine generator failed on climb out from bos. Started APU and continued using it as a generator. Just west of rdu we elected to climb from FL280 for better flight conditions. Just short of leveling at FL310, the APU failed. Descended to FL280 and attempted to restart the APU twice. Neither was successful. Elected to divert to rdu. Made an uneventful, albeit overweight, approach and landing to runway 5L.

Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW EXPERIENCE A GENERATOR FAILURE AFTER TKOF. THEY USED THE APU FOR A BACK-UP GENERATOR WHICH FAILED WHEN CLBING TO FL310.
Narrative: L ENG GENERATOR FAILED ON CLBOUT FROM BOS. STARTED APU AND CONTINUED USING IT AS A GENERATOR. JUST W OF RDU WE ELECTED TO CLB FROM FL280 FOR BETTER FLT CONDITIONS. JUST SHORT OF LEVELING AT FL310, THE APU FAILED. DSNDED TO FL280 AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE APU TWICE. NEITHER WAS SUCCESSFUL. ELECTED TO DIVERT TO RDU. MADE AN UNEVENTFUL, ALBEIT OVERWT, APCH AND LNDG TO RWY 5L.
