Narrative:

Captain taxiing to runway 3L from gate via txwys F and M and missed taxiway M and almost taxied onto runway 3L but we did hold short. No conflicts though. Incorrect taxi. Taxiway markings are poor taxiing to runway 3L at dtw. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: first officer was angry with himself for allowing this incident to occur. The airline had not been operating into dtw for about 2 yrs and the crew felt that there were many changes made since their last entry into dtw. First officer admits to being preoccupied with checklists and punching the PA button for a PA announcement to the passenger and the flight attendants. Looking up he was able to see that the PIC had missed the turn to taxiway M and he yelled 'stop!' with the flight not at the hold line. He feels that the captain misidented taxiway M since it looked like a road, being narrower in width than taxiway F. He admitted that he files many reports so as to cover himself in case of any questions related to his performance. He feels that the captain just wasn't paying that much attention to the route. A call to the facility supervisor netted a negative response as to any recent events that have occurred in that area, HS3. He replied 'no...at least not on my shift....'
