Narrative:
I was the PF at our assigned altitude on our assigned route. With the gfms engaged, we had crossed hmv VOR and had almost rolled out on our new course to flm VOR, when ATC called and requested a turn to 270 degrees. I set a breakfast tray down, which the first officer had just handed me, and reached for the microphone when ATC called a second time with the same request. I responded that we were in the turn, which we were and he replied that we had missed 2 calls and needed to listen up. We were then turned farther left to 210 degrees and told that he had had a separation problem and we needed to pay attention. At no time did ATC say 'immediate turn' or imply any sense of urgency. I believe we responded in a timely fashion to ATC's requests and given similar circumstances, would respond in the same manner. That is what I find so troubling with this whole event!

Title: MD82 CAPT EXPRESSED FRUSTRATION WITH CTLR ATTITUDE PHRASEOLOGY REGARDING TURN INSTRUCTION AT FL330 WITH ZTL ARTCC.
Narrative: I WAS THE PF AT OUR ASSIGNED ALT ON OUR ASSIGNED RTE. WITH THE GFMS ENGAGED, WE HAD CROSSED HMV VOR AND HAD ALMOST ROLLED OUT ON OUR NEW COURSE TO FLM VOR, WHEN ATC CALLED AND REQUESTED A TURN TO 270 DEGS. I SET A BREAKFAST TRAY DOWN, WHICH THE FO HAD JUST HANDED ME, AND REACHED FOR THE MIKE WHEN ATC CALLED A SECOND TIME WITH THE SAME REQUEST. I RESPONDED THAT WE WERE IN THE TURN, WHICH WE WERE AND HE REPLIED THAT WE HAD MISSED 2 CALLS AND NEEDED TO LISTEN UP. WE WERE THEN TURNED FARTHER L TO 210 DEGS AND TOLD THAT HE HAD HAD A SEPARATION PROB AND WE NEEDED TO PAY ATTN. AT NO TIME DID ATC SAY 'IMMEDIATE TURN' OR IMPLY ANY SENSE OF URGENCY. I BELIEVE WE RESPONDED IN A TIMELY FASHION TO ATC'S REQUESTS AND GIVEN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES, WOULD RESPOND IN THE SAME MANNER. THAT IS WHAT I FIND SO TROUBLING WITH THIS WHOLE EVENT!
