Narrative:
Ground had instructed us to taxi from our location on the ramp to runway 22 intersection B. While taxiing along taxiway north, we encountered a large truck parked on the active taxiway (to our left). I moved as far right on the taxiway as I could, and attempted to continue slowly past the truck. While passing the truck, the left wingtip contacted the truck's outside mirror on the driver's side (facing us) which was extended outward from the truck's cabin. There was no damage to the truck, as the mirror was the type that folds in closer to the truck. The aircraft's wingtip was dented. There were no injuries. No warning had been issued as a part of the taxi instructions, and there were men working on the other side of the taxiway. That is, the truck was on my left and the men were on my right. Immediately after this, the truck was moved off of the active taxiway. Rain on the window may have impacted the judgement of distance. Large trucks should not be parked on active txwys, and aircraft should not be taxied between trucks on the taxiway and men working along the side of the taxiway. Runway 27 was closed and blocked off, but perhaps it should have been used for taxi purposes during the construction along the taxiway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C172 STUDENT AND CFI RPTED THAT THEIR WINGTIP STRUCK A TRUCK OF A WORK CREW WHILE TAXIING FOR TKOF.
Narrative: GND HAD INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI FROM OUR LOCATION ON THE RAMP TO RWY 22 INTXN B. WHILE TAXIING ALONG TXWY N, WE ENCOUNTERED A LARGE TRUCK PARKED ON THE ACTIVE TXWY (TO OUR L). I MOVED AS FAR R ON THE TXWY AS I COULD, AND ATTEMPTED TO CONTINUE SLOWLY PAST THE TRUCK. WHILE PASSING THE TRUCK, THE L WINGTIP CONTACTED THE TRUCK'S OUTSIDE MIRROR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE (FACING US) WHICH WAS EXTENDED OUTWARD FROM THE TRUCK'S CABIN. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE TRUCK, AS THE MIRROR WAS THE TYPE THAT FOLDS IN CLOSER TO THE TRUCK. THE ACFT'S WINGTIP WAS DENTED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. NO WARNING HAD BEEN ISSUED AS A PART OF THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS, AND THERE WERE MEN WORKING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TXWY. THAT IS, THE TRUCK WAS ON MY L AND THE MEN WERE ON MY R. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS, THE TRUCK WAS MOVED OFF OF THE ACTIVE TXWY. RAIN ON THE WINDOW MAY HAVE IMPACTED THE JUDGEMENT OF DISTANCE. LARGE TRUCKS SHOULD NOT BE PARKED ON ACTIVE TXWYS, AND ACFT SHOULD NOT BE TAXIED BTWN TRUCKS ON THE TXWY AND MEN WORKING ALONG THE SIDE OF THE TXWY. RWY 27 WAS CLOSED AND BLOCKED OFF, BUT PERHAPS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED FOR TAXI PURPOSES DURING THE CONSTRUCTION ALONG THE TXWY.
