Narrative:

I was assigned the avionics portion of a 'B' check on aircraft X. Specifically, pattern card X. This card requires an operation test of the captain and first officer's radio altimeter. I have only been in avionics for approximately 4 months. I have yet to even take the avionics qualifying test. I also have not been to any lmp (lower minimum performance -- CAT 3 and autoland qualification) classes. Both crew chiefs are aware of my qualifications, so I did not think that this was an lmp issue. The crew chiefs, knowing my lack of lmp qualifications, do not assign me to lmp tasks. Sometimes I assist lmp qualified mechanics with lmp tasks, but I never signed for the work. I think that there may have been some confusion about this card. I think that the crew chiefs thought that since there was no maintenance performed on the system, and the system had not been interrupted or disconnected that the integrity of the system had not been compromised. I assumed that this was a non-lmp item because my crew chiefs were aware of my qualifications, and I don't believe they would knowingly assign me to a task that I am not qualified for. I have been assigned to 'B' checks where the pattern Y card (return to service) was assigned, which is required to be accomplished by an lmp qualified mechanic. My crew chiefs have had an lmp qualified mechanic accomplish this card. The Y card specifically states at the top of this card that it must be performed by an lmp qualified mechanic. Maybe this should be added to the X card and any other cards that require an lmp qualification to avoid any further misunderstanding or violations of any far's.

Title: AN MD80 ON A B CHK HAD BOTH RADIO ALTIMETERS TESTED AND AIRPLANE REMAINED IN AUTOLAND STATUS. TEST WAS PERFORMED BY UNQUALIFIED TECHNICIAN.

Narrative: I WAS ASSIGNED THE AVIONICS PORTION OF A 'B' CHK ON ACFT X. SPECIFICALLY, PATTERN CARD X. THIS CARD REQUIRES AN OP TEST OF THE CAPT AND FO'S RADIO ALTIMETER. I HAVE ONLY BEEN IN AVIONICS FOR APPROX 4 MONTHS. SOMETIMES I ASSIST LMP QUALIFIED MECHS WITH LMP TASKS, BUT I NEVER SIGNED FOR THE WORK. I THINK THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOME CONFUSION ABOUT THIS CARD. I THINK THAT THE CREW CHIEFS THOUGHT THAT SINCE THERE WAS NO MAINT PERFORMED ON THE SYS, AND THE SYS HAD NOT BEEN INTERRUPTED OR DISCONNECTED THAT THE INTEGRITY OF THE SYS HAD NOT BEEN COMPROMISED. I ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS A NON-LMP ITEM BECAUSE MY CREW CHIEFS WERE AWARE OF MY QUALIFICATIONS, AND I DON'T BELIEVE THEY WOULD KNOWINGLY ASSIGN ME TO A TASK THAT I AM NOT QUALIFIED FOR. I HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO 'B' CHKS WHERE THE PATTERN Y CARD (RETURN TO SVC) WAS ASSIGNED, WHICH IS REQUIRED TO BE ACCOMPLISHED BY AN LMP QUALIFIED MECH. MY CREW CHIEFS HAVE HAD AN LMP QUALIFIED MECH ACCOMPLISH THIS CARD. THE Y CARD SPECIFICALLY STATES AT THE TOP OF THIS CARD THAT IT MUST BE PERFORMED BY AN LMP QUALIFIED MECH. MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE X CARD AND ANY OTHER CARDS THAT REQUIRE AN LMP QUALIFICATION TO AVOID ANY FURTHER MISUNDERSTANDING OR VIOLATIONS OF ANY FAR'S.
