Narrative:
ECAM hot brakes on climb out FL200. As directed by ECAM slowed to 250 KTS and extended landing gear. Aircraft weight was a heavy 160000 pounds. Vertical speed minimum selectable speed was 228 KTS. Maximum gear retraction speed is 220 KTS. After gear was extended I realized I could not slow down enough to retract the gear to comply with the placarded speed of 220 KTS. Gear was raised at approximately 230 KTS. I feel the ECAM led us into this trap. There should have been mention of the maximum gear retraction speed as part of the procedure, but as PIC I am responsible to obey all placarded limits.
