Narrative:
While taxiing for departure during daylight VMC, I was distraction while we were running the taxi checklist and inadvertently crossed a nonstandard hold short line. After realizing I had crossed that line, I immediately stopped the aircraft approximately 300 ft short of the approach end of runway 31. No aircraft were on approach and we were given clearance for takeoff and given a phone number to call. After landing at ZZZ, I called and the controller told me there had been a lot of confusion with the markings and they had been trying to get the problem solved. He then told me that although it was unintentional, he had received word that he was directed to file a report if another occurrence happened. He said that there had been multiple occurrences in the past and they are trying to get the markings changed. Supplemental information from acn 619126: the hold short line is about 200 yards from runway 31 and the controller admitted it was poorly marked. This was my first trip to mdt and I was not aware of the unusual procedure.

Title: FLT CREW OF EMBRAER 145 FAILS TO SEE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 31L AT MDT LOCATED SEVERAL HUNDRED FT PRIOR TO THE RWY ENTRANCE.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING FOR DEP DURING DAYLIGHT VMC, I WAS DISTR WHILE WE WERE RUNNING THE TAXI CHKLIST AND INADVERTENTLY CROSSED A NONSTANDARD HOLD SHORT LINE. AFTER REALIZING I HAD CROSSED THAT LINE, I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT APPROX 300 FT SHORT OF THE APCH END OF RWY 31. NO ACFT WERE ON APCH AND WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC FOR TKOF AND GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL. AFTER LNDG AT ZZZ, I CALLED AND THE CTLR TOLD ME THERE HAD BEEN A LOT OF CONFUSION WITH THE MARKINGS AND THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO GET THE PROB SOLVED. HE THEN TOLD ME THAT ALTHOUGH IT WAS UNINTENTIONAL, HE HAD RECEIVED WORD THAT HE WAS DIRECTED TO FILE A RPT IF ANOTHER OCCURRENCE HAPPENED. HE SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES IN THE PAST AND THEY ARE TRYING TO GET THE MARKINGS CHANGED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 619126: THE HOLD SHORT LINE IS ABOUT 200 YARDS FROM RWY 31 AND THE CTLR ADMITTED IT WAS POORLY MARKED. THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIP TO MDT AND I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE UNUSUAL PROC.
