Narrative:
At FL270, approximately 100 NM southwest of syr, burning electrical smell in cockpit. Put on oxygen, declared emergency, ran checklists. Landed syr, normal landing. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the burning electrical smell was generated from a modular avionics box that got hot enough to melt some of the components. After the flight crew got to the gate, they wrote up the aircraft and it was grounded until maintenance fixed the problem. It was the first time that this pilot experienced this type of event. However, the reporter is new to the aircraft and he said that the reliability was poor.

Title: AN ERJ-170 FLT CREW EXPERIENCE A BURNING ELECTRICAL SMELL IN THE COCKPIT RESULTING IN AN EMER LNDG.
Narrative: AT FL270, APPROX 100 NM SW OF SYR, BURNING ELECTRICAL SMELL IN COCKPIT. PUT ON OXYGEN, DECLARED EMER, RAN CHKLISTS. LANDED SYR, NORMAL LNDG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE BURNING ELECTRICAL SMELL WAS GENERATED FROM A MODULAR AVIONICS BOX THAT GOT HOT ENOUGH TO MELT SOME OF THE COMPONENTS. AFTER THE FLT CREW GOT TO THE GATE, THEY WROTE UP THE ACFT AND IT WAS GNDED UNTIL MAINT FIXED THE PROB. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THIS PLT EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF EVENT. HOWEVER, THE RPTR IS NEW TO THE ACFT AND HE SAID THAT THE RELIABILITY WAS POOR.
