Narrative:

I was on an IFR flight plan from oak to vny. On the last phase of the flight, socal asked for heading 080 degrees, radar vector to intercept localizer (vny 111.3 runway 16R). Intercepting the localizer, I failed to stay on heading 080 degrees. Instead, I turned 160 degrees to join the localizer. A few seconds later, ATC asked for my heading. I said 160 degrees on the ILS. ATC told me I was not cleared for the ILS. I should have stayed on a 080 degree heading and gone to the other side of the localizer. Sorry I failed to follow the instructions. I should have questioned ATC before taking the action of joining the localizer.

Narrative: I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM OAK TO VNY. ON THE LAST PHASE OF THE FLT, SOCAL ASKED FOR HDG 080 DEGS, RADAR VECTOR TO INTERCEPT LOC (VNY 111.3 RWY 16R). INTERCEPTING THE LOC, I FAILED TO STAY ON HDG 080 DEGS. INSTEAD, I TURNED 160 DEGS TO JOIN THE LOC. A FEW SECONDS LATER, ATC ASKED FOR MY HDG. I SAID 160 DEGS ON THE ILS. ATC TOLD ME I WAS NOT CLRED FOR THE ILS. I SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON A 080 DEG HDG AND GONE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LOC. SORRY I FAILED TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. I SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED ATC BEFORE TAKING THE ACTION OF JOINING THE LOC.
