Narrative:
I landed on runway 18L at clt and was told to taxi to parking. I turned right on taxiway C5, but should have turned left on taxiway D3. The controller was running multiple frequencys and I asked to contact ground. The tower controller said he was ground and I explained that I wanted to cross runway 18L and go to the ramp. I was told to perform a 180 degree turn and cross runway 18L to the ramp. As I was crossing runway 18L, the controller said on the radio, 'what are you doing?' I said, 'crossing runway 18L to the ramp, like instructed.' the controller said something that I did not understand and I announced clear of runway 18L. The controller acknowledged and I taxied to the ramp. Tower said nothing more to me. I turned on the wrong taxiway due to looking at runway 36R instead of runway 18L on the airport diagram. In the future, I plan to include a runway exit plan on my approach briefings to aid in situational awareness.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BE58 PLT TURNED OFF ON THE WRONG TXWY. AFTER THE PLT REQUESTED A CLRNC TO CROSS THE RWY, THE COMBINED ATCT LCL-CTLR ISSUED THE CLRNC, THEN QUESTIONED WHY HE WAS XING THE RWY.
Narrative: I LANDED ON RWY 18L AT CLT AND WAS TOLD TO TAXI TO PARKING. I TURNED R ON TXWY C5, BUT SHOULD HAVE TURNED L ON TXWY D3. THE CTLR WAS RUNNING MULTIPLE FREQS AND I ASKED TO CONTACT GND. THE TWR CTLR SAID HE WAS GND AND I EXPLAINED THAT I WANTED TO CROSS RWY 18L AND GO TO THE RAMP. I WAS TOLD TO PERFORM A 180 DEG TURN AND CROSS RWY 18L TO THE RAMP. AS I WAS XING RWY 18L, THE CTLR SAID ON THE RADIO, 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING?' I SAID, 'XING RWY 18L TO THE RAMP, LIKE INSTRUCTED.' THE CTLR SAID SOMETHING THAT I DID NOT UNDERSTAND AND I ANNOUNCED CLR OF RWY 18L. THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED AND I TAXIED TO THE RAMP. TWR SAID NOTHING MORE TO ME. I TURNED ON THE WRONG TXWY DUE TO LOOKING AT RWY 36R INSTEAD OF RWY 18L ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM. IN THE FUTURE, I PLAN TO INCLUDE A RWY EXIT PLAN ON MY APCH BRIEFINGS TO AID IN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS.
