Narrative:
Cleared to taxi from spot assignment via taxiway Q to runway 8R. I went straight out on taxiway T, thinking it was taxiway Q, which actually lays to the south. The taxi signs of the txwys T/Q intersection were not clear to me as I thought I was on taxiway Q. I realized as I approached runway 12, that it did not look right and stopped. We did not encroach on runway 12, but had missed the turn at taxiway Q. Painting the taxiway identifiers on the ground, oriented to the depicted route, and with arrows, would solve this problem. While the new signage is better, it does not work well in a multiple taxiway intersection situation, especially when the intxns are not perpendicular.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD88 CAPT COMPLAINED THAT MIA'S NEW SIGNS DEPICTING THE TXWY T AND Q INTXN IS INADEQUATE WHICH CAUSED HIM TO INCUR ONTO TXWY T INSTEAD OF TXWY Q.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI FROM SPOT ASSIGNMENT VIA TXWY Q TO RWY 8R. I WENT STRAIGHT OUT ON TXWY T, THINKING IT WAS TXWY Q, WHICH ACTUALLY LAYS TO THE S. THE TAXI SIGNS OF THE TXWYS T/Q INTXN WERE NOT CLR TO ME AS I THOUGHT I WAS ON TXWY Q. I REALIZED AS I APCHED RWY 12, THAT IT DID NOT LOOK RIGHT AND STOPPED. WE DID NOT ENCROACH ON RWY 12, BUT HAD MISSED THE TURN AT TXWY Q. PAINTING THE TXWY IDENTIFIERS ON THE GND, ORIENTED TO THE DEPICTED RTE, AND WITH ARROWS, WOULD SOLVE THIS PROB. WHILE THE NEW SIGNAGE IS BETTER, IT DOES NOT WORK WELL IN A MULTIPLE TXWY INTXN SIT, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE INTXNS ARE NOT PERPENDICULAR.
