Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff from sjc, we got a master caution and engine #2 system fault ECAM. The engine #2 egt was pulsing amber, and increasing. It appeared that engine #2 was about to over-temperature. The ECAM gave no clear direction concerning corrective action, so a decision to reduce thrust on that engine to idle was made, and the engine was brought back to idle power. This action was enough to reduce the egt, and while still high, maintained the egt within normal parameters. After consultation with maintenance controller, we attempted to increase power on the #2 engine, with the same resulting situation that had originally occurred, with the egt increasing and on the verge of over-temping. We elected to keep the #2 engine at idle thrust, and divert into sfo. A normal landing at sfo was made. No special priority was requested. All SOP's followed, and dispatch was notified.

Title: AN A319 FLT CREW NOTE AN ENG #2 SYS FAULT ECAM WITH RISING EGT RESULTING IN A DIVERSION INTO SFO.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FROM SJC, WE GOT A MASTER CAUTION AND ENG #2 SYS FAULT ECAM. THE ENG #2 EGT WAS PULSING AMBER, AND INCREASING. IT APPEARED THAT ENG #2 WAS ABOUT TO OVER-TEMP. AFTER CONSULTATION WITH MAINT CTLR, WE ATTEMPTED TO INCREASE PWR ON THE #2 ENG, WITH THE SAME RESULTING SIT THAT HAD ORIGINALLY OCCURRED, WITH THE EGT INCREASING AND ON THE VERGE OF OVER-TEMPING. WE ELECTED TO KEEP THE #2 ENG AT IDLE THRUST, AND DIVERT INTO SFO. A NORMAL LNDG AT SFO WAS MADE. NO SPECIAL PRIORITY WAS REQUESTED. ALL SOP'S FOLLOWED, AND DISPATCH WAS NOTIFIED.
