Narrative:
Flight ewr-phx, XA50-XD20. 10 hours in hotel, return on red eye flight phx-ewr (X055-XX30). No crew meals provided, all food concessions in terminal closed. Crew requested crew nourishment due to possible low blood sugar concerns, in the cruise and descent portions of flight. (Transcon flight, middle of night, greater possibility of crew errors considered a threat in this environment, due to hunger and distraction.) gate agent and operations agent refused to order us food, claimed at the direction of higher ups in the flight department. Crew located food from the inbound flight in the galley, believed it was safe to eat, so continued on flight to ewr. (Later found out, en route, sandwich meat was spoiled by the phx heat, unable to eat. Crew probably would have received food poisoning.) this flight should not operate in the future without proper nourishment for the crews. I consider this a safety of flight and common sense issue, and will not put myself or my crew in this situation again.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 FLT CREW RPT REGARDING CONCERNS ABOUT LOW BLOOD SUGAR DURING TRIP SINCE NO CREW MEALS WERE PROVIDED FOR A TRASCON NIGHT FLT OUT OF PHX.
Narrative: FLT EWR-PHX, XA50-XD20. 10 HRS IN HOTEL, RETURN ON RED EYE FLT PHX-EWR (X055-XX30). NO CREW MEALS PROVIDED, ALL FOOD CONCESSIONS IN TERMINAL CLOSED. CREW REQUESTED CREW NOURISHMENT DUE TO POSSIBLE LOW BLOOD SUGAR CONCERNS, IN THE CRUISE AND DSCNT PORTIONS OF FLT. (TRANSCON FLT, MIDDLE OF NIGHT, GREATER POSSIBILITY OF CREW ERRORS CONSIDERED A THREAT IN THIS ENVIRONMENT, DUE TO HUNGER AND DISTR.) GATE AGENT AND OPS AGENT REFUSED TO ORDER US FOOD, CLAIMED AT THE DIRECTION OF HIGHER UPS IN THE FLT DEPT. CREW LOCATED FOOD FROM THE INBOUND FLT IN THE GALLEY, BELIEVED IT WAS SAFE TO EAT, SO CONTINUED ON FLT TO EWR. (LATER FOUND OUT, ENRTE, SANDWICH MEAT WAS SPOILED BY THE PHX HEAT, UNABLE TO EAT. CREW PROBABLY WOULD HAVE RECEIVED FOOD POISONING.) THIS FLT SHOULD NOT OPERATE IN THE FUTURE WITHOUT PROPER NOURISHMENT FOR THE CREWS. I CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY OF FLT AND COMMON SENSE ISSUE, AND WILL NOT PUT MYSELF OR MY CREW IN THIS SIT AGAIN.
