Narrative:
Approximately 1 hour 45 mins into flight at cruise altitude at FL350, fire warning horn sounded with an APU fire handle light and fire control panel fault light on. APU was shut down on the ground after engine start. Proceeded according to QRH and contacted maintenance through dispatcher. With no help from maintenance APU fire handle was pulled and fire bottle was discharged. Light remained on and ZTL was contacted for divert to atl. Center stated no delays to atl, normal spacing. Proceeded to normal landing at atl. Maintenance met aircraft, placarded APU inoperative after inspection and flight continued on to destination. Supplemental information from an 622346: APU fire warning system activated with the APU shut down and verified with switch position, APU egt, no volts frequencys and all other system normal. Tested the system and showed a fault, got the QRH out and called maintenance control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NOT POSITIVE THAT THEY WERE RECEIVING A FALSE WARNING, THE CREW OF A B737 DIVERTS TO ANOTHER ARPT AFTER RECEIVING AN APU FIRE WARNING AT FL350 ON FREQ WITH ZTL.
Narrative: APPROX 1 HR 45 MINS INTO FLT AT CRUISE ALT AT FL350, FIRE WARNING HORN SOUNDED WITH AN APU FIRE HANDLE LIGHT AND FIRE CTL PANEL FAULT LIGHT ON. APU WAS SHUT DOWN ON THE GND AFTER ENG START. PROCEEDED ACCORDING TO QRH AND CONTACTED MAINT THROUGH DISPATCHER. WITH NO HELP FROM MAINT APU FIRE HANDLE WAS PULLED AND FIRE BOTTLE WAS DISCHARGED. LIGHT REMAINED ON AND ZTL WAS CONTACTED FOR DIVERT TO ATL. CTR STATED NO DELAYS TO ATL, NORMAL SPACING. PROCEEDED TO NORMAL LNDG AT ATL. MAINT MET ACFT, PLACARDED APU INOP AFTER INSPECTION AND FLT CONTINUED ON TO DEST. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM AN 622346: APU FIRE WARNING SYS ACTIVATED WITH THE APU SHUT DOWN AND VERIFIED WITH SWITCH POS, APU EGT, NO VOLTS FREQS AND ALL OTHER SYS NORMAL. TESTED THE SYS AND SHOWED A FAULT, GOT THE QRH OUT AND CALLED MAINT CTL.
