Narrative:
While taxiing (very slowly) we struck a light pole with the outboard leading edge, right wing. After landing bog we taxied clear off runway 13R at taxiway D. We completed the 'after landing' checklist. While the first officer was talking to company operations on VHF #2, I was monitoring ground on VHF #1. Noting that our gate was occupied and the south ramp area was clear of aircraft, I asked ground for permission to taxi clear of taxiway D and move into the ramp (hardstand) area. Ground responded, 'that's fine...' (words similar). As I turned into the ramp, the first officer indicated that company wanted us to stay on taxiway D short of taxiway west. I told him that ground had cleared us into the ramp. We continued in at a very slow taxi, until a point between gates X and Y, and south of there. At that point I turned left about 45 degrees. We felt a very slight yawing (similar to the nose gear 'tire' catching the edge of a surface hole or broken pavement). We continued about 10 ft more and stopped. A couple mins later operations called to say we had hit a light pole.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW HIT A LIGHT POLE WHILE MANEUVERING ON THE GND, BECAUSE THE GATE WAS OCCUPIED, AT KBO.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING (VERY SLOWLY) WE STRUCK A LIGHT POLE WITH THE OUTBOARD LEADING EDGE, R WING. AFTER LNDG BOG WE TAXIED CLR OFF RWY 13R AT TXWY D. WE COMPLETED THE 'AFTER LNDG' CHKLIST. WHILE THE FO WAS TALKING TO COMPANY OPS ON VHF #2, I WAS MONITORING GND ON VHF #1. NOTING THAT OUR GATE WAS OCCUPIED AND THE S RAMP AREA WAS CLR OF ACFT, I ASKED GND FOR PERMISSION TO TAXI CLR OF TXWY D AND MOVE INTO THE RAMP (HARDSTAND) AREA. GND RESPONDED, 'THAT'S FINE...' (WORDS SIMILAR). AS I TURNED INTO THE RAMP, THE FO INDICATED THAT COMPANY WANTED US TO STAY ON TXWY D SHORT OF TXWY W. I TOLD HIM THAT GND HAD CLRED US INTO THE RAMP. WE CONTINUED IN AT A VERY SLOW TAXI, UNTIL A POINT BTWN GATES X AND Y, AND S OF THERE. AT THAT POINT I TURNED L ABOUT 45 DEGS. WE FELT A VERY SLIGHT YAWING (SIMILAR TO THE NOSE GEAR 'TIRE' CATCHING THE EDGE OF A SURFACE HOLE OR BROKEN PAVEMENT). WE CONTINUED ABOUT 10 FT MORE AND STOPPED. A COUPLE MINS LATER OPS CALLED TO SAY WE HAD HIT A LIGHT POLE.
